The process of acquiring an SIA Licence is relatively simple as you can fill out the initial form on their website to start. Here is a step-by-step guide to navigate the whole process of getting the SIA Licence in the UK:

1. Determine Eligibility:

Making sure you meet the eligibility criteria including age, identity verification and proof of the right to work in the UK is the first step for applying for an SIA licence. Anybody who is above 18 years of age and has a right to work in the UK can apply after passing the identity and criminal record checks. 

2. Choose the Right Licence:

Identify the specific SIA licence that corresponds to the security role you intend to perform for e.g. security guarding, door supervision, CCTV operation, close protection.

3. Complete Approved Training:

Enrollment and successful completion of an SIA approved training course for the relevant licence category. Training providers offer courses covering the necessary skills and knowledge for each security role. These courses are provided by approved training providers and the modules cover essential topics such as the law, conflict management, and emergency procedures. They usually incorporate exams as well as practical knowledge being put to test through physical assessments. 

4. Apply for the Licence:

Obtain an application form from the SIA website or request it by phone. It is mandatory to complete the application form with accurate, authentic and truthful information. Quite often the cause of rejection is inauthentic or wrong information.

5. Submit Application:

Send the completed application form along with any required documentation and the appropriate fee, to the SIA. Applications can be submitted online or by mail.  You will need to provide personal details, details of your training course, and any relevant criminal history information.

The Security Industry Authority will conduct a criminal record check as part of the application process. You have to be sure of that fact that your criminal record aligns with SIA’s eligibility criteria. 7. Wait for Processing:

Allow time for the SIA to process your application. Processing times may vary, but usually it’s around 25 working days.

8. Receive Decision:

You will receive a decision on your application. If approved you will be issues an SIA licence. If there are issues with your application, you may receive guidance on how to address them. Once you receive the licence you can start looking for and applying for jobs. 

9. Renewal:

SIA licences are typically valid for 3 years. Ensure you renew your licence before it expires to continue working legally in the security industry. The renewal process involves retraining and submitting a renewal application.

Comply with SIA regulations including adhering to the Code of Conduct. Any changed in your personal details or circumstances must be reported immediately.
